Our guiding principles

  • People are more alike than different.
  • The problem is not the disability but perceptions about people with disabilities.
  • Social role differences exist and there is a need to address them.
  • Including people reduces their vulnerability.
  • Physical and social integration can enable all people to participate in community life.
  • Any group can become vulnerable; once vulnerable they become targets of oppression. Who these groups are change over time.
  • We are not limited by geographical boundaries or to specific disabilities.
  • We offer individualized, flexible support.
  • We strive for local focus and local involvement in governance.
  • We include family members because they are an important part of people’s lives and can offer support and guidance.
  • We believe that people in diverse agencies can work collaboratively and overcome inherent tensions.
  • We are committed to developing best practices and “raising the bar” so that others can emulate our success.
