Polus International

The Polus Center strives to create opportunities for persons with disabilities and members of other vulnerable groups in post-conflict areas around the world. We work to build national rehabilitation capacities by offering local organizations training in human service design, inclusive design principles, and ongoing support for project implementation. Our efforts have included the development of rehabilitation programs, vocational training, and psychosocial trauma services.

The Polus Center partners with the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement (PM/WRA) and Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), in addition to private foundations to address the devastating impact of landmines and other explosive remnants of war on people in areas of conflict around the world. Known for its holistic, person-centered approach to community-based rehabilitation services, the Polus Center has a long history of providing physical and psychological rehabilitation services and creating social and economic opportunities for victims of conflict in Nicaragua, Honduras, Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Ethiopia, Zambia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tajikistan, Laos, Myanmar, Iraq, and Jordan.

Jordan

The Polus Center and its partner organization Asia Development Training have been providing direct rehabilitation services to war-wounded refugees in need of physical and psychological rehabilitation services in the Amman region since 2010. Jordan hosts over 727,000 registered refugees, most of whom are victims of the ongoing war in Syria and intermittent conflict in Iraq and other neighboring countries. The increasing demand for health services needed to accommodate these refugees vastly exceeds the capacity of the public health sector, putting enormous pressure on human resources, medical staff, hospital infrastructure, and health facilities, and puts an overwhelming burden on Jordanian citizens.
